How to Play Togyz Kumalak: The Ancient 9-Pit Mancala
Welcome to the world of Togyz Kumalak (also known as Toguz Korgool), a brilliantly mathematical game from the nomadic cultures of Central Asia. If you enjoy games like Chess, Go, or other Mancala variants like Kalah or Oware, Togyz Kumalak will challenge your brain in completely new ways. Here at Toguz Arena, we want to help you master this ancient "algebra of shepherds."
This guide will show you exactly how to play, step by step, so you can jump into your first online match with confidence.
1. The Setup: Board and Stones
The game is played by two players. The board consists of:
- 18 small pits (Otaus): 9 pits belong to you (bottom row, numbered 1 to 9 from left to right), and 9 belong to your opponent (top row).
- 2 large storehouses (Kazans): One for each player, used to collect captured stones.
- 162 stones (Kumalaks): The game starts with exactly 9 stones in each of the 18 small pits.
The Goal: To win, you must capture more than half of the total stones. The magic number is 82 stones in your Kazan.
2. How to Make a Move (Sowing)
Players take turns. On your turn, you must perform a "sowing" action:
- Pick any one of your 9 pits that has stones in it.
- Take all the stones out of it, but leave exactly ONE stone behind in that starting pit. (If the pit only had 1 stone, you just move it, leaving the pit empty).
- Drop the remaining stones in your hand, one by one, into the consecutive pits moving counter-clockwise (to the right on your side, and then continuing to the left on your opponent's side).
3. How to Capture Stones
Capturing stones depends entirely on where your very last stone drops!
- The Even Rule: If your last stone drops into one of your opponent's pits, AND it makes the total number of stones in that pit an EVEN number (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.), congratulations! You capture all the stones in that pit and move them to your Kazan.
- If the last stone drops in your own pit, or makes the opponent's pit an odd number, nothing is captured, and it becomes the opponent's turn.
4. The Ultimate Weapon: Tuzdyk (The Salt)
This rule makes Togyz Kumalak uniquely strategic compared to other mancalas. If your last stone drops into an opponent's pit and makes the stone count exactly THREE (3), you can declare that pit your Tuzdyk (a permanent tax zone).
From that moment on, any stone that drops into your Tuzdyk (whether dropped by you or your opponent) is automatically sent to your Kazan! It’s an incredible source of passive income.
Restrictions: You can only create one Tuzdyk per game. You cannot create a Tuzdyk in the opponent's 9th pit. You also cannot create a Tuzdyk if it is symmetrically opposite to a Tuzdyk the opponent has already created on your side.
5. The Endgame: Atsyz Kalu
The game continues until one player runs out of stones in all 9 of their pits and cannot make a valid move. This state is called "Atsyz Kalu" (left without a horse). When this happens, the game immediately stops. The player who still has stones on their side takes all of them and puts them in their Kazan. Finally, the stones are counted, and the player with 82 or more wins.
