45-minute lesson plan

Time Activity Teacher prompt Evidence / limit
0-5 min Context and names Show that Togyz Kumalak is known under spellings such as Togyzqumalaq and Toguz Korgool. Use UNESCO for cultural context, not as endorsement.
5-12 min Board setup Each player has nine pits and a store. Put nine stones in each pit for a standard start. Check the public rule guides before tournament use.
12-25 min Sowing exercise Choose one pit, sow one stone at a time, and predict where the last stone lands. Use this as arithmetic practice, not a claim of proven learning outcomes.
25-35 min Capture and tuzdyk awareness Discuss even capture and why a special pit changes planning. Keep advanced restrictions visible; do not oversimplify official play.
35-45 min Mini game and reflection Pairs play a short sequence, then explain one move with pit number, final pit, and result. Rubric observes explanation quality, counting, and respectful play.

Three classroom exercises

1. Last-stone prediction

Put 5 stones in pit 3. Students predict the final pit before moving. Repeat with 8 and 12 stones to show wrapping.

2. Capture check

Set a position where the last stone lands in an opponent pit. Students decide whether the final count is even and explain the result.

3. Tuzdyk caution

Show one candidate special pit and ask which restrictions must be checked before calling it valid.

Observation rubric
